I'd like NAS's OS to boot from USB flash drive. This will make the system completely silent during idle mode and sleeping HDD. It will be easier to upgrade the OS, just put new USB flash drive and it is done. (Not quite, but close ;) ) Other choice will be Compact Flash (CF) module.

The TS-109Pro stores its OS on the HDD. During the boot it moves the OS image to its memory.
