SAL-e's EeePC

Goal: Build very efficient, light weight and small size notebook that will become my primary computer for every day tasks like web, e-mail, and etc.

Status: Research.

Recently I got a Asus EeePC. It comes with custom version of Xandros Linux distribution. It works fine, but I am using Ubuntu Linux on my desktop so I would like to have Ubuntu on my EeePC. I have found that there is customized version of Xubuntu called eeeXubuntu. I would like to try eeeXubuntu. I am sure that the eeeXubuntu will come with some limitations, but I think will work better for me.

Before I commit to eeeXubuntu I need to tested. Here is my current plan of attack:

1. Download Xubuntu LiveCD and tested. I never try it before and I will need some experience as reference point.

2. Download eeeXubuntu LiveCD.

3. Get a 4GB SD card. I want to run eeeXubuntu as second boot and test it well before I wipe the Xandros from my SSD.

4. To install eeeXubuntu I will need a 1GB USB flash drive or external USB CD-ROM.

Applications that I want to run on my EeePC:

1. Firefox

2. Thunderbird ??? (I am using webmail, but would like to add Lightning for my calendar and todo. I also can install Sunbird instad.)

3. Skype 2.0 with webcam enabled.

4. OpenOffice (It is big, but It is my primary Office application. I will have to trim it some how. I don't know how much space I will have.)

5. Compiz (EeePC have really small display and to have ability to drag the display across virtual desktops really going to help).

6. PDF (I need to test the PDF reader that come with Xubuntu.

7. Multimidia Player. (needs to play FLAG, OGG, MP3, MP4 and MOV)
