Home Server

The main goal of this project is to build back-end support server for the smart home of 21-st century.

Current status: Testing different solutions and defining the requirements.

After running the development hardware for while I have came to conclusion that I need to change the direction of this project. Currently I'm running several task on one box and this creates too many dependencies and make upgrading individual software difficult. Also there is no single solution to cover all my desires and many of the project are actively develop. That means that I need to change my configuration often.

The new approach I'd like to test is to build set of servers with predetermined tasks That will allow me to pick-up the best-fit solution for specific function without running in to compatibility problems. Also could allow me to better optimise the hardware for specific task.

The current idea is to have common data storage and set of networked appliances. This model is miniaturized version of any modern data-center. Can I make it to work? I don't know, but I'm going to find out. First task is to solve the problem with data-warehousing. I'm planning to build Network Attached Storage (NAS) that will be very flexible and reliable with automatic maintenance and backup. I sad build because I have not found commercial version that will satisfy me.So, here is come a sub-project: Build NAS for my home.

Please stay tune for more.
